The Varginha Incident

Brazil's Roswell — a captured creature, a dead soldier, and a town that never forgot.

Year
1996
Location
Varginha, Minas Gerais, Brazil
Agency
Brazilian Army / Fire Brigade (alleged)
Credibility 3/5

In January 1996, multiple residents of Varginha reported a strange creature with a large head, brown oily skin, and red eyes. Witnesses claim the military captured at least one being — and that a soldier who handled it later died.

Varginha is South America's most famous UFO case, and one of the most witness-rich anywhere. In January 1996, residents across the Brazilian town reported sightings of a bizarre humanoid creature — short, with an oversized head, V-shaped feet, brown oily skin, and glowing red eyes. The most cited witnesses were three young women who fled in terror after encountering it near a wall.

The accounts escalated into something far larger: claims that the Brazilian Army and local fire brigade mobilized to capture one or more of the creatures, transporting them to local hospitals and then to institutions in São Paulo. Researchers allege that a military police officer involved in the handling, Marco Eli Cherese, fell mysteriously ill and died weeks later.

The official explanation pointed to an escaped, mangy animal and misidentification. But the sheer number of independent witnesses, the alleged military mobilization, and the unresolved death have kept Varginha alive for nearly three decades. To many in Brazil, it is simply accepted history that something extraordinary happened that summer.

Evidence on file
  • Numerous independent civilian eyewitness accounts
  • Alleged military and fire-brigade mobilization
  • The unexplained illness and death of an officer linked to the case
ÆTHERION Verdict

Officially an animal; locally, an article of faith. Varginha is the Southern Hemisphere's Roswell — too many witnesses to dismiss, too little hard evidence to confirm.
